Swaraj India condemns the arrest of Akhil Gogoi, Kisan leader and anti-corruption crusader of Assam.

Swaraj India condemns the arrest of Akhil Gogoi, the Kisan leader and anti-corruption crusader of Assam. Expressing shock at the news of the arrest, Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav said, “Akhil Gogoi has been arrested on trumped up charges of sedition in order to cover up the government’s discomfort with his anti-corruption agitation, his opposition to saffronisation of education and his public mobilisation against the proposed amendments to the citizenship act.”

Swaraj India had already drawn the nation’s attention to the pernicious attempts to amend the citizenship act on religious lines. This bill, currently pending before Rajya Sabha makes a distinction between Muslim and non-Muslim refugees seeking Indian citizenship.

“If passed, this bill will open the gates for Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, etc. while shutting the doors for Muslim refugees. This amounts to revival of two-nation theory that was rejected by the founders of our republic,” the party president Yogendra Yadav said.

The party has also expressed support to Akhil Gogoi, his organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and the people of Assam  in their struggle against the attempt to subvert the Indian constitution. It is noteworthy that KMSS has been instrumental in exposing corruption in various government schemes such as the PDS along with fighting for people’s rights over their lands.

The party also laid emphasis on Akhil Gogoi’s opposition against the saffronisation of the state. It is noteworthy that Akhil Gogoi had recently filed an FIR against RSS for providing arms training in Nagaon headquarters of RSS and his arrest is clearly at attempt to silence him.

Swaraj India has demanded Akhil Gogoi’s immediate and unconditional release and withdrawal of sedition charges against him.
